Couples Therapy (Gottman Method)

Relationships can be hard, even when there’s love. Many couples find themselves stuck in patterns of miscommunication, distance, or conflict, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to move forward. At Maplewood Psychology, we offer a supportive, non-judgemental space to help you reconnect and rebuild. We use the evidence-based Gottman Method, a structured approach developed through decades of research on what makes relationships last. Therapy focuses on strengthening friendship, improving communication, managing conflict well, and deepening emotional and physical intimacy. The initial phase of sessions typically starts with a duration of 120 minutes to give both partners space to be heard, with the option to move to 90- or 50-minute sessions as progress builds. Whether you're navigating hurt, feeling disconnected, or simply wanting to grow together, we’ll meet you both where you are, with respect, care, and evidence-based strategies that support meaningful and lasting change.

Comprehensive Neuro-affirming Assessments

At Maplewood Psychology, we offer comprehensive Autism and ADHD assessments tailored for children (6+yo), teens, and adults. These assessments can be completed individually or combined, depending on your specific needs. Undertaking an assessment can provide valuable insights into your unique strengths and differences, helping to guide appropriate support, accommodations, and treatment strategies. Our goal is to provide clear, compassionate, and accurate assessments to support your journey toward greater understanding and wellbeing.

For autism assessment, we use the MIGDAS-2 (Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum, Second Edition), a semi-structured and evidence-based interview process that focuses on gathering qualitative information about an individual's sensory experiences, social preferences, and thinking styles to understand their unique way of relating to the world. Other psychometric measures will also be included. For individuals aged 18 and over, parents, carers, or other close family members are welcome to be involved in the assessment process, where appropriate and with the individual’s consent. Their input can offer valuable insight into developmental history, everyday functioning, and observed behaviours across different settings.

For ADHD assessment, we focus on identifying core symptoms and functional impacts using evidence-based tools. We do not include cognitive assessments to measure IQ or assess learning difficulties (such as the WISC-V or WIAT-IV), as these are not required for an ADHD diagnosis according to the Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline for ADHD (https://adhdguideline.aadpa.com.au/). However, we respectfully acknowledge that in cases where a comprehensive cognitive or learning assessment is needed, particularly to clarify co-occurring or differential diagnoses where a neuropsychological evaluation may be appropriate. If this level of assessment is required, we kindly recommend seeking support from a clinic that specialises in neuropsychological testing.
